The Vuna Blowholes on Taveuni Island

Along the southern coastline of Taveuni past the village of Vuna, one can see craggy lava ocean's edge, which reflects the island's volcanic origin. At one point there are a number of naturally occurring blow holes. Fascinating to sit and watch the surging waves with white and aquamarine tinges and anticipate the spouting water shoots. On the incoming tide these can often shoot up to fifty metres.

A guided southern Taveuni tour often includes a visit to Vuna village and the Vatuwiri coconut plantation (still in operation) as well as the blow holes. Since most resorts on Taveuni are to the north, the trip involves a long vehicle journey also, and the coastal road is unsealed after Wairiki. Although a long ride, it is a wonderful experience as the ride offers views of verdant rainforest, large coconut plantations, small villages and of course the wonderful ocean views.
