Lake Tagimoucia

Lake Tagimoucia is located in a dormant volcano located in the central part of Taveuni. It is one of the most well-known attractions on the island, but it is difficult to reach. A full day trek leaving before sunrise and returning just after sunset, means that the lake is not accessed on a regular basis. The access road is aptly named 'Tagimoucia Road' and is located not far from the chiefly village of Somosomo. The best way to get a view of the lake is by taking a four wheel drive to Desvoeux Peak, south of the lake. From there - on a good weather day - you get a fantastic view down to the crater lake and surrounding mountains and area. Much of the lake is covered with thick reeds, but the water is easily visible.

Features of the Lake ...

• One of only four lakes in the Fiji Islands
• Thick reeds and swamp covers some of the lake
• Around the lake, roughly during the months of October - February, grows the beautiful and legendary Tagimoucia flower, a rare and beautiful flower that only grows on Taveuni at higher altitude.
• A river feeds off the lake and descends to the rugged southern coastline of Taveuni, with waterfalls along the route.

The trek is fairly rugged and takes all day, climbing up to crater edge and descending down to the lake. Not for the faint-hearted but very achievable for those who enjoy hiking.
