Des Voeux Peak is Taveuni's 2nd highest peak approximately 1,200 meters above sea level and is another popular attraction on the Island. You can get to the peak via a road from Wairiki, just near the Mission. The trip first requires a 4-wheel drive to the gates and takes about 30-40 minutes. From there it is a 20 minute hike up the road to the top (steep but not difficult). The trip up to the top provides splendid views of the rich tropical plants, palms and rainforest trees on Taveuni. This region is also popular with bird watching trips, enabling them to view many of Taveuni's rare species. From the peak you get splendid views of the Somosomo Strait, as well as Vanua Levu, Rabi, and other islands to the west. To the east you can view Lavena and the eastern coast of Taveuni as well as a great view of Lake Tagimoucia to the northeast. The lake is best viewed from a new cleared area where Digicel are planning a communications tower.

The trip is well worth the effort but make sure you start the trip early in the morning when the skies are usually clearer. Later in the morning, clouds often 'bubble up' and cover Des Voeux Peak with clouds.
